California is adopting this method over the original method of taking fingerprints. Live Scan is a digital form of fingerprinting where the person places their fingertips on a digital reader, and the machine scans the fingerprint much like a scanner/printer does with paper. These fingerprints then get digitally recorded and are sent to the California Department of Justice.
